Mathieu Aupitre, better known by his stage name “Mateo”, is a french saxophonist, arranger and vocalist currently part of the Playing For Change Band.
His style is mostly influenced by Jazz, Caribbean music and Soul music.

From a musicians family, Mateo chose the saxophone at 12 years old and had a classical teaching. Then he learned jazz by himself and entered the jazz departments of different conservatories: Agen, Montpellier and Toulouse, where he graduated in 2007.

During his studies he collaborated with various projects and artists from the Toulouse’s scene, leading him to perform in many venues and festivals – Jazz In Marciac, Jazz Sur Son 31, Tempo Latino

Mateo moved to Barcelona in 2008, and since then has performed with artists such as Carlos Sardui, Alvaro Benavides, Anga “el Indio de la Revé”, Robin Reyes, Kumar Sublevao, Orbe Ortiz, Ray Cuza, Vicenç Solsona (afrocuban jazz / son cubano), Munir Hosnn, Alan Da Sousa, Jurandir Santana, Mark Aanderud, Ramiro Pinheiro (brazilian jazz),”Tula” Tal Ben Ari, Xumo Nunjo, Bino Barros (World music), Mel Seme, Enrico Moreira, Gigi Mc Farlane, Clarence Milton Bekker (Pop-Soul)…
His diverse collaborations in brought him to many recording sessions and concerts, principally in Spain and through Europe and Africa.

Since 2016 he is part of the PLAYING FOR CHANGE movement, touring regularly across the 5 continents in renowned venues and festivals: Bluesfest (Byron Bay, Australia), Billboard Awards (Tokyo), Bourbon’s Street Fest (Sao Paulo), Direct TV Arena (Argentina), The Independant (St Francisco), The Mayan Theatre (Los Angeles),  Jazz Alley (Seattle), Highline Ballroom (New York)… and has performed with THE DOOBIE BROTHERS, James Gadson(MOTOWN), Ellis Hall (TOWER OF POWER), Lee Oskar (WAR), John Densmore (THE DOORS), Vasti Jackson (B.B. KING)…

Along his musical journey, he has participated to many jazz masterclasses: Kenny Garret, Rick Margizza, Eric Barret, Christian “Tonton” Salut, Pierre de Bethmann, Peter Giron, François Theberge, Dave Liebman

Mateo is currently working as arranger and producer and will move to New Orleans in 2019.
